The quest for the fountain of youth is as old as time, but new research suggests a simple, affordable habit might actually help turn back the cellular clock. According to a recent study, taking a daily multivitamin could slow biological aging in older adults.
In a comprehensive two-year trial known as the COSMOS study, researchers analyzed blood samples from 958 healthy older adults with an average age of 70. The results were highly encouraging: participants who took a multivitamin every day effectively slowed their biological aging by approximately four months. In other words, during the 24-month study, their bodies only aged 20 months at a cellular level.
To understand this breakthrough, it is essential to distinguish between chronological and biological age. While chronological age simply tracks the years since your birth, biological age measures the actual wear and tear on your body's cells and tissues. Using cutting-edge "epigenetic clocks" that track microscopic DNA changes, researchers found that multivitamins significantly slowed two specific markers linked to mortality risk. Notably, these anti-aging benefits were even more pronounced in individuals who already exhibited accelerated biological aging when the study began.
Experts caution that a multivitamin is not a magic cure. As epidemiology professor Daniel Belsky noted, "Nobody thinks taking a multivitamin is going to rejuvenate them". Howard Sesso, the study's senior author, emphasized that a diverse, colorful diet remains the cornerstone of healthy aging. However, as we age, natural difficulties in absorbing nutrients—alongside rising food costs and challenges in meal preparation—can create significant dietary gaps.
While other specific supplements like Vitamin D3, B12, and Omega-3s also show targeted promise in supporting immune and brain health as we grow older, the standard multivitamin stands out as a low-risk, highly accessible intervention. For older adults looking to improve their long-term health trajectory, this daily pill might just be the easiest preventative step to take.
