Despite challenges to public health and science funding in 2025, the medical field witnessed a surge of transformative discoveries. From the first human brain-to-iPad interface to long-distance robotic surgery, researchers demonstrated that the boundaries of healthcare are rapidly expanding.


One of the year's most striking achievements involved Mark Jackson, an ALS patient who became the first person to control an iPad entirely through thought. Using a brain-computer interface (BCI) developed by Synchron, Jackson can now send texts and browse media without voice or hand commands. Neurologists believe this technology will eventually restore movement and language to many others.


In the realm of genetics, personalized medicine reached a new milestone with baby KJ Muldoon. Born with a deadly metabolic disorder, KJ received a custom CRISPR-based therapy designed specifically for his unique mutation. Today, he is thriving and reaching developmental milestones like walking. Additionally, researchers made strides in treating Huntington’s disease, using RNA-based drugs to slow its progression by up to 75%.


The organ shortage crisis met new solutions in 2025. Surgeons at the University of Southern California performed the first successful human bladder transplant. Simultaneously, breakthroughs in xenotransplantation occurred as scientists identified the specific immune reactions causing the rejection of gene-edited pig kidneys. By measuring blood biomarkers, doctors can now spot rejection attacks five days before they occur, potentially making pig-to-human transplants a "normalized" reality for thousands.


The reach of the operating room also went global. A surgeon in Florida successfully performed robotic telesurgery on a prostate cancer patient in Angola, 7,000 miles away. This technology promises to bring expert care to underserved areas worldwide.


Diagnostic and pharmaceutical advances were equally robust:

  • Alzheimer’s Detection: The FDA cleared the first blood test to help diagnose Alzheimer’s, providing a rapid, less invasive alternative to traditional testing.

  • Non-Opioid Relief: For the first time in over 20 years, a new non-opioid medication (Suzetrigine) was approved for acute pain, offering a non-addictive alternative to traditional painkillers.

  • Preventative Vaccines: Data revealed that the shingles vaccine may reduce the risk of dementia by 20%. Furthermore, mRNA COVID-19 vaccines were found to unexpectedly boost the efficacy of certain cancer immunotherapies.

  • Specialized Pills: New treatments emerged for sleep apnea (the drug AD109) and a nonhormonal male birth control pill that reached early human safety trials.
