The Season 1 Finale (Episode 12) of Hospital Playlist was widely anticipated, proving to be a "monster of an episode" that provided major resolutions while strategically leaving key storylines open for the subsequent season. The core focus of the finale was the long-standing dilemma faced by one of the five central doctors, Ahn Jeong-won (Daddy Long Legs), regarding his desire to become a priest versus his deepening romantic feelings. While the drama consistently prioritized the compassionate work of the medical field, the finale adeptly wove romance into the medical setting, culminating in one of the season’s most pivotal, transformational moments: the Winter Garden confession. This retrospective draws together reviews and recaps detailing how the finale handled Jeong-won's choice and the ongoing professional and romantic arcs of the other members of the 99 cohort.

The Winter Garden Confession: A Transformational Moment

The culmination of Ahn Jeong-won’s internal struggle arrived in the form of the "Winter Garden confession sequence," which has been described as "absolutely pitch-perfect". This sequence, central to the finale, signaled the end of Jeong-won's long-held angst about dedicating his life to the priesthood, instead choosing to remain an ordinary man who loves.

For the devoutly Catholic Jeong-won, the confession sequence was fittingly set on Christmas Day, the day Christians celebrate the birth of the Son of God who became a man, symbolizing Jeong-won's decision to embrace life as a man rather than "a son of God" (a priest). His certainty about the priesthood had been seriously questioned after he unexpectedly fell in love with his General Surgery colleague and student, Jang Gyeo-ul.

Gyeo-ul’s Courageous Vulnerability

Despite Jeong-won sitting on his final decision to stay for at least three weeks, it was Gyeo-ul who, out of desperation, initiated the pivotal confession. She took a monumental risk, challenging the status quo and putting her pride on the line by coming right out and saying "I like you," with no certainty of his reaction. She approached him with "abject humility" and "grave apprehension," repeatedly apologizing for imposing herself, even uttering the line, "It’s not my place to say this".

Unbeknownst to Gyeo-ul, she was enormously important to him; important enough to cause him to doubt the priesthood, and important enough that he would run from the cafeteria to the ER when she suffered an anaphylaxis event. The confession forced him to face his avoidance. It was highly embarrassing for Jeong-won, who had been avoiding this step, to watch the woman he loved perform the courageous act he himself had been putting off.

The Unspoken Response

Jeong-won’s response to Gyeo-ul's grand gesture was immediate and physical, commencing with skinship and leading to the lip-locking. It was the only way he could surpass the declaration she had just made. The kiss served as his "unspoken confession," enacting all the things he had wanted to say to her since the anaphylaxis episode but couldn't. This display of intimacy was accompanied by tears welling up in his eyes, interpreted as his apology for the deception, hesitation, and delay that had forced her to take matters into her own hands.

The intimacy was symbolic: he went for her hair, signifying he loved everything about her—her simplicity, innocence, and audacity—harkening back to a time when her hair was dishevelled after a chase. When he finally embraced her, it heralded a man who had ended an extended, "almighty battle with himself," signifying his total surrender and declaring he was utterly and completely hers. This transformation erased the line between them; he morphed from The Professor to The Lover, ending months of wrestling with his desires.

Resolving Vocation: Ahn Jeong-won’s Choice

The relationship between Jeong-won and Gyeo-ul was deemed the most important romance thread of the season because it directly bore upon his dilemma regarding the priesthood. The sources confirm that Jeong-won had been in love with her for at least six months, perhaps longer, based on his antics at an OBGYN-Ped conference. Flashbacks were used in the finale to confirm that Jeong-won had feelings for Gyeo-ul all along, with the "panic running" during the anaphylaxis event revealing the depth of his repressed emotions.

Falling in love provided a "different set of possibilities" regarding his work. Since pediatrics can be lonely or painful, the solution was perhaps not to run away from it, but to have someone by his side to share the burden. The writer wisely paired him with a junior colleague still honing her skills, potentially amenable to his influence, making "perfect, logical sense" for his situation. Gyeo-ul became increasingly important to Jeong-won, acting as his de facto right hand, to the point where he defaulted to calling her in emergencies. Even an anesthetist noticed Jeong-won was "overusing" Gyeo-ul, suggesting his intentions were not completely hidden to experienced eyes.

Ultimately, his decision to stay in Yulje was a combination of factors, which does not go against a Christian understanding of vocation or "calling" to serve others as a physician. As Song-hwa notes, he can do much good staying in pediatrics, and now he has someone to help him shoulder the "baggage that comes along with it".

The 99ers’ Crossroads: Uncertainty and Growth

While Jeong-won’s arc found resolution, the other four doctors were left dealing with significant cliffhangers, highlighting the show's realistic portrayal of the hardships in maintaining personal relationships while juggling demanding medical careers.

Seok-hyeong and the Weight of Inheritance

Seok-hyeong, who emerged as a "real sweetie" throughout the season, inherited all of his horrible father's worldly possessions, including a request to give up being a doctor and become CEO of the company. This inheritance deeply affected him, especially because his father selfishly left out his mother and the child he had with his mistress.

Realizing that life is too short to do something that wouldn't make him happy, Seok-hyeong chose to remain a doctor. However, his emotional baggage made him hesitant, leading him to turn down Min Ha's feelings, though he showed regret. The show acknowledged that he needs time to work through his parent issues and past relationship failures. The arrival of a call from his ex-wife at the very end indicated that he has a lot yet to deal with, leaving hope for an interesting story in the next season.

Song-hwa’s Necessary Respite

Song-hwa decided to take time for herself to heal a neck injury, which the long hours in surgery were aggravating. She opted for a calmer position in a small coastal hospital, allowing her to recover while remaining a practicing doctor. She reassured her friends that she would still be close enough to return on the weekends.

Song-hwa's romantic future was also left hanging, as she received confessions from both Ahn Chi Yong and Darth Vader Daddy (Ik-jun). When Ik-jun confessed his feelings, she did not tell him to stop talking, unlike the other suitor. She was advised to take time in deciding whether she wanted to reciprocate his feelings, leaving viewers to trust that she will know what is best for herself.

Long Distance and Lingering Feelings

The dynamics for Ik-jun and Jun-wan also faced complications at the close of the season.

Jun-wan (Marshmallow Doc) and Ik Soon officially transitioned into a long-distance relationship, with Jun-wan unable to see Ik Soon off due to emergency surgery. He had secretly purchased couple rings but was too nervous to give them to her. After a heart-to-heart with his Chief Resident, who advised him not to make the decision for her, Jun-wan mailed the ring in a letter. The drama ended on a disheartening cliffhanger when the package was returned, marked "return to sender". While some viewers believe this was a simple mistake due to a complicated address, others note that Jun-wan is unaware of Ik Soon’s specific issues regarding marriage and commitment, potentially complicating their relationship.

Ik-jun (Darth Vader Daddy), known for his wisdom and friendship, finally made a move on Song-hwa. While helping her move, he spoke about liking a "friend" and fearing he would ruin their friendship if he confessed. He emphasized that he felt compelled to confess or he would miss his chance again. Their strong bond suggests that even if she turns him down, their friendship will continue. This confession arc maintained the show's commitment to avoiding rushed romance.
